Pea Shooter Mark Wilson Wins Humana Challenge
In the age of bomb and gauge, it’s always refreshing when a self-proclaimed pea shooter wins on the PGA Tour. Our latest refreshment came Sunday at the Bob Hope Classic…..err the Humana Challenge as Mark Wilson drained a 10 foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole to win by what was ultimately two strokes. The win was the third in the past two seasons for Wilson, and the fifth of his career. Wilson’s two victories last year also came early in the season, with wins at the Sony Open in Hawaii and the Waste Management Open in Scottsdale. Wilson averages a “short” 275 yards off the tee makes up for it with laser like iron play and unconsciously good putting. On the contrary, long-bombing T-2nd place finisher Robert Garrigus consistently was blowing it 50-60 yards past Wilson off the tee, but again came up short in his bid for victory. Excuse us in advance as we throw out the old cliché, “drive for show, putt for dough.” 3 events so far this season, 3 short hitters win (Steve Stricker, Johnson (Muntford) Wagner, and Wilson). What will Torrey Pines bring?
